PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Drummer Janet Weiss of the rock band Quasi hosted a 24-hour “Drumathon” to raise money for a Portland dog adoption center.
The event took place at One Tail at a Time – PDX from Jan. 28 to Jan. 29. According to the animal adoption center’s Instagram page, more than $21,000 was raised during the event.
The idea came after One Tail at a Time welcomed 14 dogs from Los Angeles who were rescued from shelters affected by the devastating fires.
Weiss, who regularly volunteers at dog rescues, wanted to find a way to help the dogs coming from her hometown.
“She came to me with the idea, and it kind of evolved. She thought, ‘What if I did a 24-hour drum solo to raise money?’ and I was like, ‘That’s actually crazy,’” said Juli Zagrans, Executive Director of One Tail at a Time – PDX.
Weiss, a former member of Sleater-Kinney, live-streamed the entire event on Instagram Live and hosted “virtual hangouts,” in which she interviewed people like Stella Mozgawa, Gretchen Grimm, and Britt Daniel.

There were live performances by musicians including Rebecca Cole and Joanna Bolme. Weiss also performed with her Quasi bandmate Sam Coomes.
A fan-favorite moment was a drumming/comedy bit with Portlandia and Saturday Night Live star Fred Armisen, who mimicked how he imagined different dog breeds would sound on the drums.
A golden raffle allowed guests to win a complete Ludwig drum kit.
“This event feels pretty iconically Portland because Janet has lived here so long and has been such a mainstay in the Portland music scene,” said Zagrans.
On Thursday, One Tail at a Time – PDX will welcome a flight of more than twenty rescue dogs from animal centers in Texas. The funds raised from the Drumathon will help support these new rescues, as well as those from LA fire rescues and other programs.
