BEEKMANTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – The owner of a New York animal shelter where nearly 50 dogs were seized last year will not face jail time.
“Just for the record. This is just a sad situation that I am sorry for,” said Hilary Davis, the owner of A Canine Gem in Beekmantown.
Davis faced dozens of charges but a plea agreement reduced them down to just five: four counts of animal cruelty torture and one count of forgery.

Davis was sentenced on Wednesday. She will be on probation for five years and cannot own pets aside from companion animals for 10 years.
Rebecca Moss-Patnode, the executive director of the Elmore SPCA which took in the dogs, says she doesn’t believe Davis is sorry for what she did.
“Honestly, I really question whether or not she was in rescuing for the right reasons and I am hesitant to claim that she feels the remorse that she does,” Moss-Patnode said.
Most of the dogs taken from the shelter have new homes. Two had to be put down.
