WAUKESHA, Wis. – Nearly 40 dogs were transported from California on Tuesday, Jan. 28, to Waukesha County.
Displaced shelter dogs moved
What we know:
From more than 2,000 miles away, 37 dogs from Ventura, Calif., arrived in Waukesha on Tuesday afternoon.
The pets that arrived on the flight were already housed in shelters and available for adoption prior to the wildfires in southern California, but were being transported to put southern California animal shelters in a better position to care for additional displaced animals.
The shelter the dogs came from was at around 142% capacity.

Seven local shelters and organizations are taking them in.
The dogs will get a medical evaluation, a bath and probably a good nap after the day of traveling.
Up for adoption
What’s next:
Then, the best case scenario is finding a permanent home in Wisconsin.
The Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) said they expect the dogs to go up for adoption in the next couple of days. All dogs are 50% off.

What they’re saying:
“This is not an area we’d do transfers out of on a regular basis, this is just a disaster transport,” said Katie Jenson with HAWS. “We are fortunate enough to have some space available and able to take them in. I love it when we take transports. It’s a great feeling to be able to see all the dogs and you’re helping other dogs there too.”
