Collinsville man discovers bag containing cremated remains of 2 people, 2 dogs he never knew

COLLINSVILLE, Okla. — An interesting mystery is now solved. A FOX23 viewer in Collinsville contacted our newsroom when he discovered a duffel bag on his front porch with four boxes of ashes inside of people and pets he never knew.

FOX23 spoke with the man about how this unfolded and how FOX23 was able to help find and contact the proper family.

By Monday afternoon, FOX23 was in touch with the correct family who was supposed to get these ashes.

But this all began after a man came home from church to find a red duffel bag by his door and while hesitant, he took the bag inside and made the disturbing discovery.

“I’ve been looking ever since to try to find out who it is to give it back to them; the family or whatever they want. I don’t know who left it here,” Gary Winton said.

Winton was coming home from church on Sunday.

He wasn’t expecting any sort of package, especially on a Sunday, but was met with a red duffel bag on his porch.

Winton took the bag inside and found something he never expected. There were four boxes of ashes, two belonging to people and two belonging to dogs.

“All I could do was open it up and see what it was. After opening it up, I got a little bit concerned that I should’ve done that because you don’t know what’s in them things,” Winton said.

Winton said he made multiple phone calls trying to figure out where the ashes came from and how they got to his door.

Along with the boxes of ashes was a debit card.

He called the bank of the debit card and the cremation place to try and find answers.

“I called about it and never even got a hold of a janitor. They just say, ‘Well hang on, somebody will come,’ after a while answered later, whatever. I just gave up on them,” Winton said.

FOX23 tried to give them a call again to see if they would answer and provide a solution this time, but no luck. Winton said it had to be some sort of mix-up of delivery.

“I think that somebody a concerned person was trying to give this back to the family and just got the wrong house. That’s my guess. What else could it be,” Winton said.

FOX23 found the obituary of a woman whose remains ended up on Winton’s porch.

We then found the phone number of the woman’s sister. The sister said the two dogs belonged to the woman.

Soon enough, FOX23 got a call from the woman’s daughter saying all of the boxes were hers and there was definitely a delivery mix-up.

After speaking with Winton and getting in contact with the family, FOX23 turned to the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office to see what to do next.

They said if you’re ever in the same situation as Winton, contact police immediately so that way they can take over and investigate further and trace down where the mix-up could’ve happened.

The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
