Metro Detroit deep freeze: How rescuers are saving dogs from the cold

The cold weather continues to bring dangerous conditions outside in Metro Detroit. Meanwhile, dog rescue teams are driving around attempting to save animals that may be left outside in the freezing temperatures.

This story may be upsetting for some readers.

Big picture view:

On Tuesday, the Detroit Dog Rescue showed up to a home where a German Shepard puppy was kept inside with their parents left outside in the cold. The temperature was 3 degrees, feels like -10 degrees.

The day before, DDR got a call on their tipline. When they got on the scene in Detroit, they found a dead dog and its companion who wouldn’t leave his side.

“We are just finding one dead dog after another,” said Kristina Rinaldi with DDR. “We picked up a beautiful shepherd with muscle mass, great weight, his paws were as big as my hand, but he was frozen solid. He stopped dead in his tracks, laid down, and died.”

If they’re not dead, crews would have to pry dogs who are frozen to their cages.

“Their paws and their noses and their ears. Everything is freezing, whether it’s a shepherd or even a husky, it’s too cold,” said Rinaldi.

The first visit was a success. The dogs are inside for now, and Rinaldi and the crew will be back for a more permanent solution. At the next stop in Southwest Detroit, one by one, four dogs come out of their rickety plywood dog houses.

No straw, water, or food was visible.

Rinaldi gets Detroit Animal Control on the scene, and they make contact with the owner, who brings them inside, but she’s given no citations despite visible violations.

It’s a temporary fix, but it doesn’t end there.

The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
