In 2024, France Boosts Its Handbag Exports By 15% to Reach $10.1 Billion – News and Statistics

For the third year in a row, France recorded decline in overseas shipments of handbags, which decreased by -17.5% to 18M units in 2024. In general, exports recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 459%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 174M units. From 2017 to 2024, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handbag exports fell slightly to $9.7B (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. China (22M units) was the main destination for handbag exports from France, with a 102% share of total exports. Moreover, handbag exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (2.4M units), ninefold. Singapore (2.2M units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2014 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +69.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+2.2% per year) and Singapore (+14.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for handbag exported from France were China ($2.1B), the United States ($1.3B) and Singapore ($1.1B), together comprising 45% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +39.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials (12M units), handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather (6M units) and handbags with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard (435K units) were the main products of handbag exports from France.

From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather (with a CAGR of +0.0%), while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, handbags with the largest exports in France were handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather ($6B), handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials ($3.6B) and handbags with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard ($41M).

Handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2024, the handbag price stood at $463 per unit in 2023 (FOB, France), jumping by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 94%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($919 per unit), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($80 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+15.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
