St. Lawrence County investigators have determined that the fire at a Canton animal shelter last fall was accidental.
On October 24, crews responded to a fire at the No Dogs Left Behind facility on Route 68 in Canton. The building was destroyed. Forty-four dogs inside died.
In its origin and cause report, the county’s fire investigation team said a fan placed less than a foot in front of a kerosene salamander heater caught fire in a room with dog kennels.
Investigators say the room temperature dropped enough for the heater to turn on, it ignited the fan, and the fire spread from there.

The report noted the building did not have any smoke alarms or an onsite alarm system.
In November, New York State Police said they were investigating possible dog neglect at the No Dogs Left Behind kennel. They have not released an update.
The kennel was also the subject of many noise complaints from neighbors after it opened in 2023.
