PEABODY — When police detectives after a two-month investigation went to a large single-family home at 105 Goodale St. on the morning of June 13 to execute a search warrant they expected to find drugs.
Not only did they find the drugs, but they also found three puppies and two older dogs, all hungry, mistreated and confined in filthy cages on the property, Peabody Police Lt. David Bonsanti said.
Homeowner Duarte Silva, 47, was arrested that morning and charged with possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance (cocaine), and with possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance (marijuana and/or hashish).
He was also charged with cruelty to animals.
All five of the dogs were fed, watered and moved to a local veterinarian where they were cleaned up and housed in fresh, more spacious facilities until they can be put up for adoption, according to police.
Peabody police said they worked with the NEMLEC SWAT Team, Lynnfield Animal Control, Revere Animal Control and Animal Rescue League of Boston to carry out the arrest.
Silva was arraigned on the charges in Peabody District Court on Friday, June 14, and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on July 17.
