RACKERBY, Calif. – A Rackerby resident is urging the community to take action after claiming dozens of dogs on a neighbor’s property are being mistreated.
Jason Steele, a ten-year Rackerby resident, says the situation has persisted for two years, during which he has filed 24 complaints with the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office. He alleges the dogs are kept chained or caged, often left outside in freezing conditions.
“You can come down here, stand by their driveway, and wait 30 minutes to hear them all over the property,” Steele said. “They’re everywhere.”
Steele previously reported concerns last summer when he said some of the dogs attacked his own, resulting in a veterinary bill of more than $700. He now hopes the community will reach out to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Animal Control Division to advocate for the dogs’ welfare.
“It’s freezing every night out here. The dogs are constantly crying. They’re kennel crazy. It’s unbelievable what’s going on over there,” Steele said.
Sheriff’s Office Response
Yuba County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Katy Goodson acknowledged the situation, stating that cases like this are often complex and challenging to resolve through law enforcement alone.
Goodson added, “The Sheriff’s Office encourages neighbors to resolve their issues in a civil matter, as law enforcement may have limited ability to act.”
Steele’s Frustration
Steele expressed frustration with the Sheriff’s Office, stating that despite his numerous complaints and the submission of photos and videos as evidence, no arrests have been made.
“I complained, another neighbor complained, a third neighbor complained,” Steele said. “If the office was truly concerned, they would’ve acted on one of my 24 complaints.”
Steele is now asking the community to help amplify his concerns and call for action to address the alleged mistreatment of the dogs.
How to Help
Steele encourages concerned residents to contact the Yuba County Sheriff’s Animal Control Division to advocate for the animals and bring attention to their living conditions.
