MIDDLEBORO — One pup left. Tanner, who may have lived in filth for years will be going to a safe and active home very soon. The Middleboro Animal Shelter says they will no longer accept adoption applications for Tanner because of an outpouring of interest in adopting the lovable canine.
“We can not thank you all enough for sharing our sweet Tanner! We are overwhelmed with the love shown to our boy,” the animal shelter posted on Facebook on Jan. 8.
Tanner is the last dog from the Precinct Street animal cruelty case. The shelter says they will be making their decision once they have finished all of Tanner’s meet and greets. Those will be done this week and next week.
“We’ve had great support from the community since this case. We’ve had lots of meet and greets and we have more coming up,” said Middleboro Animal Control Officer Kevin Racicot.
Racicot tells us Tanner took awhile to get ready for adoption because he had some behavioral issues. He was aggressive when he first arrived to the shelter.
“A lot of it had to do with trust,” said Racicot.
Racicot tells us when these dogs were in cages for days, just sitting there. It messed with them physically and mentally. Tanner specifically had a hard time trusting males.
“I am not a bad guy, I am here to help you. One day it just clicked and he jumped on me and he gave me a kiss,” said Racicot.
What is the Precinct Street case?
In addition, a press release from Town Manager Jay McGrail and Health Agent Kayla Smith, said there were plans to rescue two cats, a turtle and a guinea pig. In another press release, Interim Police Chief Robert Ferreira in November of 2024 said the Middleboro Police Department charged 43-year-old Kimberly Ann Savino with 20 counts of animal cruelty. Police said they found in the investigation Savino only came to visit the animals once a week and no one regularly lived inside the home.
“This is huge and this a relief to see these dogs go into these great homes because for so long they weren’t able to be dogs,” said Racicot.
Once Tanner does find the right home the shelter still plans to check in on Tanner and his new owner.
