Sheriff’s deputies seized 36 dogs from what authorities deemed were unsafe and unhealthy conditions.The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant Wednesday at a house on Gershwin Road in Charlotte Hall based on a suspected animal cruelty investigation.Investigators said residents of the house were performing illegal procedures on the dogs, and deputies found evidence of the procedures, according to the sheriff’s office.Authorities said many of the dogs appeared malnourished and underweight while they lacked medical care.The animals were taken to the St. Mary’s County Animal Adoption and Resource Care Center for evaluation and treatment.”Our primary focus is ensuring these animals receive the care they need,” said Jen Utz, the county’s director of the Department of Emergency Services. “The health and safety of our community and its animals remain our top priority.”Kelvin Lovern Shepherd, 51, and Dominique Tiasha Parrish, 35, both of Charlotte Hall, were charged with aggravated animal cruelty, animal cruelty and unlawful surgery on a dog, according to the sheriff’s office.The sheriff said deputies also found a Ruger 9-mm handgun and ammunition and that Shepherd is prohibited from having firearms due to a prior conviction. He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm.Anyone who’d like to support the animals can donate supplies, serve as a foster home or volunteer at the center by emailing Animal.Control@stmaryscountymd.gov.
