FOLEY, Ala. (SBG) — A Foley man was arrested after allegedly discharging a firearm to break up a dog fight in his backyard, police said.
According to police, on the evening of January 14th officers received a call of a disturbance in the 600 block of West Marigold Ave in Foley. Several calls came in from the area about hearing dogs fighting and then gunshots.
When officers arrived the disturbance was over, but the homeowner would not come to the door. The information was passed on to the Investigations Division Wednesday morning, and officers were able to make contact with Thomas K Hall, 61, at the residence and inspect the backyard and the dogs. Hall had an outstanding Failure to Appear warrant and was taken in for that charge and additional questioning.
Hall told investigators that one of the aggressive dogs attacked one of the more timid dogs. He could not break up the fight physically and was bit in the process. He then retrieved a shotgun and shot into the ground to break them up. The dog that was attacked was able to break free and ran under a shed in the backyard.
The three dogs were inspected and it appears that two were injured in the fight. The two dogs were transported to a local vet by the police department to be treated for injuries and a more thorough inspection, but there are no obvious signs that any of these dogs have been shot.
Hall was charged with Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits and two counts of Cruelty to Animals for not seeking medical treatment for the two injured dogs.
Police are investigating to see if any of the dogs are considered vicious under city ordinance.
