When dogs come into the stressful shelter environment, there are many possible reactions. Some dogs completely shut down, others cry and seek affection, and then there are dogs like Harriet who have big feelings about the whole thing! Harriet is not pleased about being in the shelter and would initially show it by barking in her kennel, jumping and pulling toward other dogs, and acting aloof towards her handler. Just like many dogs who have been abandoned, Harriet felt the need to act tough to survive. While we admired Harriet’s strong will, eventually she has shown us her more sensitive side.
It turns out that Harriet loves stuffed animals. She will even take them on a walk with her, carrying them gently in her mouth the whole way. Occasionally Harriet will dismember her stuffed friends, but we know it’s out of love. When Harriet is stressed, she will seek comfort and reassurance from you and glue herself to your side. When strong dogs show you their soft side, it absolutely melts your heart. Outside of the shelter, Harriet is an altogether different dog. She is goofy and wants nonstop attention. The shelter is not a comfortable place for Harriet and she needs a home to truly succeed.
Please call the Athens County Dog Shelter at (740) 593-5415 to meet Harriet.
