HOPE — Hauser got off to a fast start and never looked back Tuesday night.
The Class A No. 7 Jets scored 22 straight points to open the first quarter to cruise to a 70-30 Mid-Hoosier Conference boys basketball victory over North Decatur.
“It was a total team effort. It was so unselfish watching the group play together the way they are right now, and that’s what’s leading to these big point totals and these large margins of victory. It’s the unselfish play,” Hauser coach Trent Moorhead said. “You could pick anyone of our guys to talk about tonight that did some really positive things. There’s so much positive to look at tonight.”
The game was originally supposed to be played Friday, but the snow that pushed through during the day postponed the contest to Tuesday. It gave the Jets a 17-day layoff between games, but the layoff showed no effect in the game on Tuesday.
“I was proud of how we responded off a 17-day break we’ve had in between games, so you certainly could use that as an excuse to come 0ut and play sloppy, and I was proud of how we had the mental toughness to battle through a long layoff and still come out and produce positively as a team tonight,” Moorhead said. “I’m really proud. It’s always good to win conference games, especially to do it that way on our home floor was really good.”
Hauser (8-1, 3-0) led 22-3 after the first quarter and 39-14 at the half. The Jets pushed the lead to 52-16 midway through the third quarter to trigger a running clock the rest of the contest. Both teams played their benches in the fourth quarter.
“Those guys have worked so hard for us in practice and throughout the week working as the scout team, and that hard work they put in practice pays off in their JV games,” Moorhead said. “Our JV is undefeated right now in large part to those guys — Tyler (Deiwert), Bill (Miller), Joel (Bechtel) and then Jacob Bell and Chester Lonaker. There’s a lot of hard working guys down there that do some unseen work, so it’s awesome when they check in for the varsity game and get baskets and play well.”
Hauser put five players in double figures with Ledger Gelfius leading the way with 15. Taeshaun Tungate finished with 14, Collin Buck scored 13 and Gavin Keller and Kam Blair each added 10.
As good as the offense was for the Jets, the defense also played a big role, as well.
“We played team-connected defense, and then we focused on really who the main guys are and we shut them down, make it hard on the point guard to set up the plays, and it goes from there,” Tungate said.
The Jets have a much tougher test ahead when they face county foe for Columbus North for the first time in five years on Thursday.
