An 11-year old boy, the only son of a peasant family, living on the outskirts of Hassanpur village near here in Ludhiana district died after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs.
The deceased, who was killed after being dragged to nearby fields by the canines, was identified as Harsukhpreet Singh, a Class V student of Government High School in the village.
In the past week, Arjun, the minor son of a migrant family of the same village, had also succumbed to his injuries inflicted during an attack by stray dogs, when the victim was flying a kite near his house. He was a student of Class IV of the school.
Upset and furious over the negligent attitude of the administration towards the stray dog menace, residents of Hassanpur village and surrounding localities held a dharna on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur Highway following the death of the boy on Saturday.
Speakers addressing the dharna alleged that over 12 residents, including elderly persons and children, had been injured during attacks by stray dogs near unsafe Hadda Roris situated on the outskirts of villages during a couple of weeks. Death of the migrant family’s son, Arjun (10), has gone unnoticed as his parents had preferred to remain silent. It was after the death of Harsukhpreet that residents gathered to draw the attention of the administration towards the menace.
Demanding compensation for the poor aggrieved families, villagers alleged that ferocious stray dogs thriving on carcasses at hadda roris had been a persistent danger to life of the residents. “As two families have lost their children due to negligence of the administration, we demand suitable compensation for the loss. We also demand that the administration should take measures to prevent accidents and injuries being caused due to stray dogs,” said villagers who came to support Randhir Singh and Shankar, fathers of the deceased children, Harsukhpreet and Arjun, respectively.
