ROGERS, Ark. — After residents expressed concerns about Rogers Animal Shelter dogs kept outside during frigid temperatures over the weekend, the City of Rogers announced on Jan. 8 that the dogs had been moved to indoor kennels with the help of the NWA Humane Society.
On Sunday, Jan. 5, 5NEWS received a video from a viewer that showed dogs at the Rogers Animal Shelter kept outdoors in freezing cold, snow, and wind. Workers at the shelter told 5NEWS they have had limited space since the Memorial Day weekend tornadoes destroyed one of their buildings, and they are at capacity now.
“We are committed to doing everything in our power to expanding capacity at the shelter in the future,” the city said. “Rebuilding of the storm-damaged building is in the works.”
The city said the shelter currently has 12-month kennels that are modified to mitigate seasonal weather challenges. However, ahead of the next winter storm system, officials announced the animals have been moved to indoor kennels thanks to the NWA Humane Society,
“We have had a longtime relationship with them and are incredibly grateful for their assistance at this time,” the city said.
With this change, Rogers is still urging residents to adopt.
“Adoption transforms the lives of the pets, giving them a loving home, and it prevents overcrowding at shelters,” officials said.
