A tragic incident in Northwest D.C. is raising serious safety concerns, as two dogs have reportedly died after being electrocuted on a sidewalk.
WASHINGTON – A tragic incident in Northwest D.C. is raising serious safety concerns, as two dogs have reportedly died after being electrocuted on a sidewalk.
Pepco crews were on the scene yesterday, working to determine the cause and safeguard the area. The company released a brief statement acknowledging the incident and emphasizing the safety of their communities and workers.
“We are aware of two incidents that occurred yesterday near 1140 19th St. NW involving two individuals and their pets. Our thoughts are with the individuals impacted by this event. The safety of our customers, communities and employees is always our top priority. We are working closely with local authorities and are continuing to investigate this matter,” said Chuck McDade, a senior communications specialist for Pepco.
The first incident occurred around 4 p.m. Monday when a man and his dog, a yellow lab mix named Chile, were walking on 19th Street NW. The dog suddenly started acting erratically and yelping. A passerby, who heard the dog’s cries, rushed down from his office building to help but also felt electric shocks. Sadly, Chile died after being rushed to the hospital.
Later, around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, another dog owner reported that their dog was electrocuted at the same location. Unfortunately, the boxer died on the scene.
A FOX 5 source suggests that the sidewalk may have been electrified due to an underground cable issue, but Pepco has not confirmed the cause. DC Fire and EMS, along with the Metropolitan Police Department, are investigating. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
