BIXBY, Okla. — A Bixby show dog that just started in show business is really proving he was made to compete.
Chico, a Giant Schnauzer, stands tall, broad and stout. He quickly became a champion and has only been in show business for less than a year and a half.
“In two long weekends he championed out. It was really surprising. We thought it’d take at least one or two months,” said Laurie Coplen, Chico’s owner.
When he’s not on the road he’s getting lots of play time at home. But he’s a rising star when it comes to standing out among other top dogs.
“Our handler said I’ll put him in a couple of shows, get him in the swing of things, and we will try to get him his grand championship. We thought surely not in a show or two,” said Coplen.
Sure enough, that’s what happened, helping Chico get his ticket to the 148th Westminster Show in New York City. He didn’t win, but he still went home with a high rank in the competition that had the other dogs twice his age chasing their tails.
“He’s just a baby. His competitors were mostly four-and five-year-olds, had been there before. He’s just had a very limited show career but he’s just coming on like game busters,” said Coplen.
Chico’s almost two. He’s ranked 16th in the Nation and number two in Oklahoma by the AKC. Chico has some time off before hitting the road for shows in September. In December, he will go to Orlando for the Royal Canin Show.
