PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — A black Labrador named Scout has returned home after surviving two weeks on his own, marking what his rescuers are calling a “Christmas miracle.”
Nadine McCaffery, who works with Rhode Home Rescue, was deeply concerned when Scout, a 1-year-old black lab, ran away from his foster home.
“I thought it was over. I thought it was over. It was very emotional,” McCaffery said.
Determined to find Scout, McCaffery and her team immediately launched a search effort.
“We immediately deployed our missing dogs of Mass team, put up all our signs and started the search for Scout,” she said.
Scout was last seen running into the woods after being hit by a car.
Despite extensive searches, including the use of drones, Scout remained missing for two weeks.
On Christmas Day, Scout miraculously returned to the street of his foster home.
“She heard some dog commotion out in the yard, and she looked out in the yard, and Scout was in the yard with her dog attempting to play, a Christmas miracle,” McCaffery said.
Scout is currently receiving treatment at an animal hospital, where his injured leg will need to be amputated.
“They do believe that he will make a full recovery,” McCaffery said.
Covering Scout’s medical expenses will be costly for the all-volunteer rescue group.
“Once he’s a Rhode Home dog, he’s always a Rhode Home dog. So if you’d like to make a donation, every penny counts,” McCaffery said.
Reflecting on the ordeal, McCaffery expressed her gratitude for the happy ending.
“This is probably the longest time we’ve had a dog missing. And I mean, it was pouring rain, and then it was freezing cold right after the pouring rain, so I wasn’t holding out a whole lot of hope that after being hit by a car, wet and freezing, that he was going to be okay, but he was. And Santa brought us a present,” she said.
