Home for the holidays: Northeast Ohio dogs who have spent years in shelters

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Too many Northeast Ohio dogs have spent years in the shelters, and a home to call their own is at the top of their Christmas list.

These precious pups have stayed in the shelters nearly their whole life, patiently waiting for a “fur-ever” family to adopt them.

If you want to open your hearts to the joy of adoption, here are the six dogs 19 News has featured this year who are still searching for a home for the holidays:

Nitro has spent nearly 2,300 days in the shelters… That’s most of his seven years of life!

He is a very energetic boy who loves to swim, hike, and go on adventures.

If you are an active family who likes to exercise, adopt Nitro at The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Warren.

“I have been at the shelter for six years and really could use a hero. I don’t understand why no one wants to adopt me,” the shelter said on Nitro’s behalf. “I am such a good boy.“

Emerald has waited five years for a safe and loving home of her own after being rescued from a “disgusting” apartment, the shelter described.

The shelter said this 8-year-old girl takes a bit to warm up to new people.

But once she gets to know you, she’s a “people pleaser who loves to play, get belly rubs, and will work hard for treats!”

So if you are a family willing to be patient and without small children, adopt her from the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project shelter.

Jan. 3, 2025 will mark Athena’s 1,000 day at the Wayne County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center.

That is more than half her life…

“We just truly cannot understand why such a sweet girl like Athena has been here for such a long time,” WCDS stated.

WCDS said she “just wants all the love and attention you are willing to share with her. There’s nothing she’d love more than to curl up next to her person and soak in all the pets, she will repay you with the sweetest kisses.”

If you have no other animals or young children in your home and want to be her person, she is at the shelter in Wooster.

This Richland County Dog lived outside, in a shelter, or in a prison his whole life, and he is waiting for you to give him the home he’s been wanting to call his own for nearly three years.

Heller came into the Richland County Dog Warden as a stray in May 2022, but he is not staying at the shelter…

He was moved to the Mansfield Correctional Institution (ManCI) for the ManCI Prison Program training in May 2023.

This awfully cute approximately 3-year-old good boy was described as playful and energetic, knows how to sit and shake, and loves to be outside!

If you are a family without cats who wants to break Heller free, adopt him through the warden.

This Richland County Dog has also spent most of his life as a stray, in a shelter, or in a prison, and has been waiting for a family to break him free for 2.5 years.

Bishop came into the Richland County Dog Warden as a stray in July 2022.

Like Heller, he was moved to the Mansfield Correctional Institution (ManCI) for the ManCI Prison Program training in April 2023.

Bishop’s favorite trick is to roll on the floor for treats, and he loves a warm bath.

“For the right persons they are the best dogs ever!” the dog warden said. “Bishop and Heller are best as the only dog in the home but each has an amazing personality to match.”

Marnie was born on March 1, 2022, and brought to the Euclid Animal Shelter in Sept. 2022, where she has been ever since.

That mean’s she has spent only six months of her life outside of a shelter.

“Two years is a long time to wait for a family,“ the shelter said on Marnie’s behalf. “It’s been lonely watching my friends leave for their forever homes while I stay behind. Please, if you have space in your heart and home, consider giving me a chance…”

She loves to run, play, chase after toys, snuggle, and show off her best dance moves.

If you’re a family without small children, but with a fenced-in backyard where she could stretch her legs and explore, you would make Marnie’s dream come true.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
