Three people and two dogs are now safe after falling through ice in South Berwick on Monday evening.
At around 4 p.m., the Cumberland Fire Department, police department and the North Yarmouth Fire Rescue group were called to Knights Pond off Greely Road.
When officials arrived, the people had been able to pull themselves out of the pond, but the dogs required rescue. According to witnesses, at least one other person had broken through the pond’s ice earlier on Monday, fire department officials reported.
Mainers are warned to exercise caution if going out on the ice. With constantly fluctuating temperatures, ice may not be a safe, uniform, thickness across bodies of water. It is extremely easy to get hypothermia once a person has fallen into icy waters.
