The Franklin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department along with police and EMS rescued a dog that had fallen through the ice and swam to an island approximately 75 feet offshore on Sunday.
Assistant Chief Michael Piccoli was among the first to arrive on the scene at Shadow Lake after the call for help and confirmed the dog’s location. Rescue crews quickly responded, donning ice rescue gear and devising a plan to bring the stranded animal to safety, according to a statement by the police on Facebook.
Firefighters used a homeowner’s canoe found near the water’s edge to reach the dog while awaiting additional equipment and manpower, including a rapid deployment craft from Utility 344.
“With some teamwork — and a few treats to win the dog’s trust — Firefighters Jost and Chazen were able to leash the pup and bring him safely back to shore,” the statement said.
The Franklin Lakes Police Department and the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Ambulance Corps were also on-site, assisting with the rescue and providing support for the crews.
The dog was uninjured and reunited with its owners.
