LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas – You may remember a series of stories we started a few weeks ago about stray dogs in Liberty County attacking people.
Now, two people who volunteer to help rescue and rehouse some of those strays, Jenny Rodriguez and Zully Vasquez, say the scope of the problem also includes people dumping unwanted dogs. Animals that may have been shot or run over and are now suffering on the streets.
“The reason why we do feed them there’s a couple of reasons. One because a lot of them are just starving,” Rodriguez said. “The other reasons that we feed is to try to avoid attacks. So, a lot of dogs they’re roaming and they’re hungry and they’ll go into people’s property and attack a chicken or goat livestock.”
Rodriguez believes there are more than one thousand strays in the Colonius area outside of Cleveland.
“It’s really hard to save large dogs and it has a lot to do with the adoption rate, so adoption is down, especially since COVID,” she said.
Liberty County Commissioner David Whitmire said there are no updates on county efforts to curb the problem at this time, but he is still working on it.
We are going to continue to stay on top of this and hopefully bring you some new details soon
