Animal shelter invites people to bring dogs home for holidays with sleepover program

A Middletown animal shelter wants its furry friends home for the holidays and they hope the community can help.

Potter League for Animals CEO Brad Shear shared their idea for a holiday foster sleepover program.

Here’s how it works: People reach out to the shelter with interest in a dog to foster.

The person can pick up the pooch on Dec. 23 and keep them through the 27. The non-profit will provide you with the food and supplies needed to care for them.

The animal shelter will work with any foster who needs a flexible schedule.

“For a dog to go to a home, it helps them decompress for a couple of days, relax, get some sleep, get some more interactions,” said Shear. “Sometimes during the holidays, people are home all day. They’re getting constant interaction with somebody all day, which dogs love.”

Director of Marketing & Community Relations Kara Montalbano said the shelter is full.

“We may have one kennel open at this point and it’s usually for emergencies but we are absolutely full,” said Montalbano.

Montalbano introduced NBC 10 to some of their dogs participating in the sleepover program.

“This is Minnie. She’s three. She’s the sweetest thing ever,” said Montalbano.

The non-profit hopes to get all of the animals out of their kennels and into your homes for the holidays, getting everyone into the holiday spirit.

“I think we take fantastic care of the animals here, but it’s still not a home,” said Shear.

NBC 10 interacted with Koby, Loofie, Travis, Chip, and Petey–all loveable dogs.

The initiative helps the dogs, but it also relieves the staff, who work 365 days a year to care for the animals.

“They’re just wonderful and through no fault of their own…have ended up here at the shelter,” said Shear. “I think people who take these dogs home for a few days will find out how great they are.”

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
