The Maine Warden Service is asking for the public’s help to find the person who shot a dog on a popular hiking trail in North Yarmouth late Friday morning. A $2,000 reward is being offered by Maine Operation Game Thief for information leading to an arrest.The incident happened around 11 a.m. on Friday on a trail in the Knights Pond Preserve. Three people were walking their dogs when one of the dogs, which was about 20 feet ahead of the group, was suddenly shot.Judy Camuso, commissioner of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, didn’t hold back in her reaction. “This atrocious, negligent shooting is both heinous and inexcusable and is aggravated by the cowardly act of the shooter fleeing the scene,” she said. “This one appalling act tarnishes the reputation of Maine’s 230,000 hunters, and we’re all outraged.”The shooter is described as a man in his 30s with dark hair and scruffy facial hair. He was wearing a blaze orange vest, a blaze orange hat, and camouflage pants. Witnesses say he quickly fled the scene and was later spotted leaving the area in a dark-colored, full-size pickup truck.Officials are asking residents near Henry Road and Edna Lane to check their security or doorbell cameras for any footage of the truck leaving the area around the time of the shooting.If you know anything, you’re encouraged to call the Maine Warden Service at 207-624-7076 or Operation Game Thief at 1-800-ALERT-US.
