Does California have a state dog? What’s the popular breed? Your dog questions answered

Thanksgiving can be summed up with a few key words: Food, family, football and furry friends.

In addition to all the delicious food served Thursday, families gathered around the television to watch the 2024 National Dog Show in Philadelphia, where another adorable dog was crowned the winner.

All that tail wagging and cuteness overload got us thinking: Is there a state dog in California? What is the most popular breed in the Golden State? We’ve got answers.

Does California have a state dog?

Around 13 states have official state dogs, but California is not one of them.

Maryland was the first state to name a dog breed as a state symbol, giving the title to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever in 1964, in honor of the state’s well-known bay region.

Other states that have recognized official four-legged pals include: Alaska (Alaskan Malamute), Connecticut (Siberian Husky), Delaware (rescue dogs), Louisiana (Catahoula Leopard Dog), Massachusetts (Boston Terrier), New Hampshire (Chinook), North Carolina (Plott Hound), Pennsylvania (Great Dane), South Carolina (Boykin Spaniel), Tennessee (Bluetick Coonhound), Texas (Blue Lacy), Virginia (American Foxhound) and Wisconsin (American Water Spaniel).

What is the most popular dog breed in California?

French bulldogs took the top spot for most popular dog breed in California, Newsweek reports.

Overall, this breed comes in second for popularity in the United States, though it is only the top breed in three states, according to Newsweek.

The top 10 most popular dog breeds, according to U.S. News, are:

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
