Food recalls galore:Does America have a worsening food safety problem?
What is salmonella?
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and fatal infections in children, the elderly, pregnant women and other people with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever 12- 72 hours after eating a contaminated product.
Pet food can sometimes be the source of Salmonella infection. If people handle contaminated pet food or a contaminated utensil and then touch their mouth, they can accidentally ingest the bacteria.
The infection is not common in dogs and cats, but they can carry the bacteria.
What are signs of salmonellosis in dogs and cats?
According to the FDA, signs of salmonellosis in dogs and cats include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea (some with blood in it)
- Decreased activity levels
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
Even if a dog or cat does not have symptoms, according to the FDA, the pet can still shed it in its stool and saliva and, in turn, spread the bacteria to humans and other pets.
