In the time that I have been volunteering at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter there has been quite an increase in Shepherd-type dogs. Currently about a third of the available dogs are considered to be German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd or some sort of Shepherd mix.

One of our longer residents is Asar. Asar is stunningly handsome! He is obviously a German Shepherd mix but what he is mixed with is a mystery. We have a few donated DNA tests and Asar is next in line to be tested. It’s a fun game to try and guess what the results will be! Asar has a long elegant snout that seems to have come down a different lineage; what do you think?

Asar has more going for him than just a pretty face. He has had quite a few walking buddies during his stay at the shelter. For some reason, becoming one of Asar’s walking buddies seems to be the key to getting adopted! His most recent pal met him one day and was adopted the next. Now it really should be Asar’s turn. Asar has been a solid learner and has demonstrated some nice walking skills. He is known to the shelter staff as being very tidy in his kennel, never shredding his toys or blankets. He gave the Dash and Splash pool a good try, wading in but not quite ready to dive in, but on an outing to the beach he showed that he is a strong and willing swimmer. He absolutely loved the beach, running through the dunes just for the joy of it and rolling happily in the sand.

He is a sweet and loyal boy, waiting quietly in his kennel until he sees his special friends coming for a walk. Asar is also very affectionate and loves to lean in for some pets. He is about four years old, neutered, vaccinated, micro chipped and heartworm tested. Asar weighs in at about 80 pounds.

One of Asar’s friends who has not yet been adopted is Emma. Emma is a sweet girl who would really like a nice place to land, preferably a home equipped with a cozy bed and some soft toys.

Emma is currently occupying a space that was designed as a livestock kennel. She waits patiently for her walks as she tries to keep her space clean. She is always so excited when we come to walk her that she runs to find a toy to show us and carry around as we hook her up.

Emma is not the athletic type; she prefers a shorter walk and some time to snuggle or play with her toys. Her enthusiasm at seeing a volunteer coming always brings a smile to all who see her!

Emma is a big girl, weighing in at about 80 pounds, but could use a little slimming down in her forever home. Emma gets along great with her neighbor Brolin, who shares a wire wall with her, and is walking buddies with Asar. She is about five years old, spayed, vaccinated, micro chipped and heartworm tested.

Both of these dogs are available through the Humboldt County Animal Shelter. Appointments are available by calling (707) 840-9132.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
