HUDSON, Texas (KTRE) – Mostly everyone knows how to play hide and seek but may not have played the game with a dog.
“They can get lost basically for our members and they can be found by our dogs and our humans,” Mike Stephens the president of Hudson Search and Rescue Team said.
The Hudson Search and Rescue Team is asking for volunteers to help train their search dogs. Volunteers will meet the team at a scheduled training session. During the training volunteers will hide while dogs track you down by using your scent.
“They are used to seeing us, used to smelling us. That allows the dogs to look for someone they’ve never encountered before,” Stephens said.
The team conducts searches in many parts of East Texas. In addition to searching on the ground, they also do aerial searches. They cover lost and missing person cases, natural disasters, and are requested by law enforcement and emergency management.
“The need for search and rescue is great in many areas. You never know when someone is going to get lost from a small child to someone who has dementia or Alzheimer’s that may walk off from their home. While we may not get a call for weeks, we might get six in a month,” Stephens said.
As of right now, they have two dogs that are certified and are trying to certify two more. The team is always looking for members to join the actual search and rescue team. There are different positions like dog trainers and communication specialist, just to name a couple. It’s all volunteer and you do not have to live in Hudson.
