A dog killed a woman and injured a man, who are believed to be the animal’s owners, while also biting two Boston police officers, according to the department.
Boston police responded to a report of two people being attacked by a dog inside their home around 4:49 p.m. on Monday in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood, Deputy Superintendent Paul McLaughlin said during a news conference. When officers arrived, they found two people suffering from bite wounds in the front of the home, he added.
While rendering aid to the victims, the dog attacked two of the responding officers, according to McLaughlin. At that time, one of the officers discharged their service weapon and shot the dog, the deputy superintendent said.
After the dog was shot, the two victims were taken to a hospital with the woman suffering from life-threatening injuries, McLaughlin said. The woman ultimately died due to her injuries, according to police.
A Boston police spokesperson told USA TODAY the department is not releasing the deceased woman’s name at this time. The two officers and the male owner suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the spokesperson.
What happened to the injured dog?
The injured dog responsible for the attacks, and three additional dogs at the scene, were taken by Boston Animal Care and Control, McLaughlin said.
The wounded canine, which is a pit bull mix, was eventually taken to Angell Animal Medical Center following the shooting for treatment, but the owner’s son agreed to euthanize it due to its worsening condition and poor prognosis, NBC Boston reported.
The other three dogs, which are also pit bull mixes, are in fair condition and being supervised by Boston’s veterinary medical director, animal control told NBC Boston.
