A 5-year-old beagle named Nico has left social media viewers in stitches with his antics, which prompted calls for him to be presented with an Oscar.
Nico’s owner, Javier Martínez Pérez posts on TikTok and Instagram under the handle @javier.martiineez. He set up a camera to keep an eye on his pet while he was out, and in a viral video with more than 480,000 views, Martínez shares the moment he returned home, key in hand, to find Nico demonstrating a convincing “innocent” act.
Moments earlier, Nico had been lounging on the forbidden couch. But as soon as he heard the key turn, Nico leaped off the sofa and positioned himself in his bed—strategically placed on a chaise longue—just in time for Martínez to step inside.
The pièce de résistance? A perfectly timed yawn, as if Nico had been snoozing there the entire time.
“I usually let him on the couch when I’m home, but when I’m out I try to keep him off it,” Martínez, who lives in Spain, told Newsweek. “I’d noticed before that when I put the key in the lock, I could hear him jump off, so I set up my phone to capture it. What I got was so much better than I expected. I laughed so hard and gave him tons of kisses.”
Nico’s performance is shared with a caption that reads: “I don’t let him on the sofa…it’s been a while. I put his bed on the chaise longue to see if what he likes is being up high. And the guy has decided to put on the performance of his life!” which has delighted viewers on TikTok.
In the comments, people were laughing. Viewer @sonikaflaca, declared: “And the Oscar goes to…,” while @adrianabr92 agreed and said: “Give that beauty an Oscar immediately!”
Others shared their own relatable experiences, like @patri campos moreno, who wrote: “My dog also sometimes waits for me to fall asleep and climbs on the couch—then I see the traces of the crime…his hair.”
Martínez was stunned by the viral response on TikTok.
“I never imagined it would go viral like this. The views, the comments, the likes—it’s incredible. Nico has made so many people laugh, and that’s all I could ask for,” he said.
