Over a dozen more dogs are safe after being found in poor conditions at a Pembroke animal shelter.The Bryan County Sheriff’s Department arrested Joy Bohannon, the director of Georgia Animal Rescue and Defense (GARD), for animal cruelty back in August.Over 50 dogs remain on the property and are still in need of homes, but right now, 123 dogs have been rescued.One Love Animal Rescue took nearly a 700-mile drive with dozens of dogs to an animal rescue in Delaware called Grass Roots Rescue. Volunteers were able to find over a dozen temporary foster families for the animals in the Savannah area until the dogs found their find permanent homes up north.Volunteers transported 30 dogs earlier this month and 93 in September.One Love Animal Rescue volunteer, Jim Coryell, said every transport is always emotional for foster families. “Some very tearful goodbyes and some very close to, I’m not letting that dog go, I’m keeping it here, but then they decided, and we convinced them that if they let this one go, maybe they could foster another one and save one more,” Coryell said.The trip to Delaware wasn’t smooth sailing, their bus’ engine failed just outside of Washington, D.C., three hours away from their destination.The pet rescue Grass Roots Rescue had to drive down in a local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals bus.”The whole process took about an hour and a half because we had to actually put a dog in a crate, put the crate in the new vehicle, and then stack another one next to it,” Coryell said. “So it was a little bit of a Tetris, they call it, as they tried to figure out how to piece this puzzle together.”Luckily, volunteers said the dogs remained calm.”The entire trip, from a dog standpoint, was relatively quiet,” Coryell said.Volunteers said their goal is to get all of the dogs off of GARD’s property and they are hoping to plan their next transport to save even more dogs, but are in need of even more foster families.To foster or adopt a dog, visit here.
