Dogs often look for leftovers when their owner has food, but one pup’s quirky habit whenever her owner eats has left internet users speechless.
After TikTok user @teresita1818 enjoyed a tuna sandwich for lunch, there was no food left in sight, but that didn’t stop her dog from trying to get a taste of it. The owner posted a hilarious clip online showing her dog sitting in front of her and waiting patiently, looking as though she’s about to be given an actual bite of food.
But that certainly wasn’t what the dog was after, because all @teresita1818 had to do was simply blow some air in the dog’s direction and she lapped it up instantly. So desperate to get a taste of her lunch, the dog started licking the air as the scent came off her owner’s breath.
This unusual habit left internet users in stitches, leading to more than 305,400 views and 55,800 likes on the TikTok video in just a matter of days. Newsweek contacted @teresita1818 via TikTok for comment.
The caption alongside the clip jokes: “I just ate a tuna sandwich and she’s been waiting for this.”
Just like this pooch, many dogs are adept at begging for food and know exactly how to get those delicious leftovers from their owner’s plate. Although, it’s worth monitoring what they have, and indeed, how much.
While dogs see no harm in devouring an entire meal, Hill’s Pet Nutrition explains that human food is rich and fatty, which makes it hard for a dog to digest. Overindulging in our food can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, or more severe conditions such as pancreatitis. This can also result in unnecessary weight gain, as even a tiny amount can pile on the extra calories.
In fact, dogs should never consume more than 10 percent of their daily caloric intake from treats or human food, according to Hill’s Pet Nutrition.
Aside from the physical effects, rewarding them with leftovers can also encourage this unwanted behavior. It might seem cute at first when they give you those big puppy eyes, but over time that behavior can develop and lead to them hovering over your plate, barking while you’re eating, or even refusing to eat their own food because they’ve filled up on yours instead.
Thankfully, there’s no risk of this dog filling up because all he’s getting is the air that his owner breathes. He’s not complaining though, he still thinks it’s delicious, nonetheless.
Since the clip went viral, the video delighted plenty of TikTokers, leading to more than 220 comments at the time of writing. Plenty of social media users lauded the dog’s genius way of getting a taste of her owner’s lunch without the unnecessary calories. As it turns out, many fellow dog owners could relate to this habit too.
One comment reads: “Omg now this is an original experience.”
Another TikTok user joked: “I was no prepared.”
“My dog does this after I brush my teeth,” wrote one social media user.
While another person added: “My dog waits for my after-food air and burps too! She’s obsessed!”
