A Georgia animal shelter is celebrating a special adoption for a dog who finally got picked up by her forever family after 801 days.
Queenie first came to the Humane Society of Forsyth County (HSFC) in February 2022. She was surrendered to a rural shelter because she was pregnant, Amanda Porter, development and fundraising director for HSFC, told Newsweek.
She came in with health challenges—heartworm positive and food and skin allergies. The HSFC’s Forever Care/Special Needs program helped treat her for heartworm and gave her the prescription food and medication she needed.
HSFC welcomed her and her 10 puppies into foster care while she nursed her babies until they were old enough to be adopted. But while her puppies were adopted out “fairly quickly,” Queenie stayed with the shelter.
Always sporting a smile, she was gentle and affectionate. She became a favorite among staff and volunteers, but the process of getting her a forever home took longer than expected due to her preferring being the only pet in a home and she was an older dog, almost 9.
Thankfully, her day finally came in October when her adopters came to pick her up. HSFC shared the good news of Queenie hitting “the jackpot” in an October 19 Facebook post. In the photos, Queenie sports the biggest smile as she poses with her new owners, rides in the car to her new home and enjoys a doggy bed made for royalty.
“After 801 days with us, Queenie finally found her perfect family,” Porter said. “Her new home is everything we could have hoped for, and she’s already being treated like the queen she is.”
Porter explained how Queenie’s adoption became a bittersweet moment for HSFC, one filled with “happy tears.” The staff and volunteers will miss her warm presence and gentle snuggles, but they are excited for her future with her forever family.
Plus, her adoption brings hope to many other dogs who spend months and years in an animal shelter.
“We often see older dogs or those with medical conditions spend more time in our care, while younger, healthier animals tend to get adopted faster,” Porter said. “This is why shelters like HSFC are so important—providing second chances for animals who are often overlooked.”
People flooded the comment section of the Facebook post, celebrating Queenie’s happy ending. The post reached over 500 likes, 130 comments and 28 shares as of Tuesday.
“I’m not crying your crying. I have been watching Queenie since 2022 just praying her furever home would find her,” one person said.
