WEBSTER — A Webster man is facing a number of charges, including drug trafficking and animal cruelty, after breaking into the town animal shelter Monday afternoon.
Police officers were called to the shelter on South Main Street just before 4 p.m. after a man broke in and was trying to retrieve his dogs, according to Webster police. Earlier, Animal Control Officer Desiree Roussin took possession of the dogs after an animal-neglect investigation, police said.
When officers arrived at the shelter Monday, they discovered 25-year-old Taj Wood trying to drive away, according to police. Wood was uncooperative, but ultimately taken into custody, police said.
According to police, Roussin said she had tried to return the animals to Wood earlier, but he had failed to provide the correct paperwork.
On Monday, Wood showed up at the shelter, went into the gated area and unlocked the kennel doors, removing both of his dogs, police said. While this was happening, Roussin called police.
During a search of Wood’s vehicle, officers discovered 126.7 grams of what was later confirmed to be methamphetamine pills, according to police.
Wood is no stranger to law enforcement and is currently on an electronic GPS ankle monitoring device, following an arrest for armed home invasion and armed assault last month, according to police. Wood was also arrested in 2022 on violent firearms offenses, police said.
Wood was expected to be arraigned Tuesday, charged with trafficking methamphetamine, larceny from a building, animal cruelty, breaking and entering in the daytime for a felony, and trespassing.
