BASTROP COUNTY, Texas — As the Hudson Fire continues to rage just east of Bastrop, Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is working swiftly to ensure the safety of animals in the area.
APA! has teamed up with Bastrop County Animal Services (BCAS) to evacuate 142 dogs from the shelter and help move them into foster homes to protect them from the advancing threat.
BCAS, the only animal shelter serving multiple communities—including Bastrop, Cedar Creek, Elgin, and Smithville—is currently at capacity. With the growing threat of displaced animals arriving, the shelter is urgently seeking assistance to clear space for any new pets in need.

In response to the crisis, APA! is calling for emergency fosters to help care for these animals, many of whom are already in APA!’s care.
How You Can Help:
Foster: APA! is urgently looking for emergency fosters to take in dogs already in care. The shelter is extending its hours until 7 p.m. Monday and will reopen Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. to facilitate foster sign-ups. If you’re unable to foster today but are willing to help soon, please sign up online to become a foster parent.
Location: APA! Main Shelter, 1156 W. Cesar Chavez St.
Donate: The influx of animals from BCAS will incur additional costs for transport, care, and rehoming. Donations are urgently needed to ensure these animals receive the resources and support they deserve.
