I’m a dog trainer. These beef cheek rolls I tested beat bully sticks in every way

Under $50 Scores

Dog chews are hard on the wallet. Twelve-inch bully sticks regularly cost between $8 and $12 each, with 10-packs costing between $50 and $80 depending on the brand. Some super chewers can demolish an entire footlong bully stick in 5 to 10 minutes, like my Border Collie Amstaff mix, Miso. That’s an expensive few minutes of chewing.

Instead of forking out an arm and a leg for bully sticks whenever I want to give my two dogs an enrichment activity, I opt for the Amazing Dog Treats Beef Cheek Rolls. These no-hide dog chews last longer, don’t smell as bad, are easier on my pups’ stomachs and are a fraction of the price of a bag of bully sticks.

The Amazing Dog Treats Beef Cheek Rolls are long-lasting and significantly cheaper than other comparable dog chews. The 8-pack of 5- to 6-inch Mega-Thick chews will run you $32, and each chew lasts multiple sessions.

How I found the Amazing Dog Treats Beef Cheek Rolls

After Miso’s bully stick habit brutalized my wallet for the first six months she lived with me, I was on the hunt for a non-rawhide chew that was a little bit cheaper and lasted longer. I came across a TikTok from Maddie (@myboyrudder) showing off her Springer Spaniel chewing a beef cheek roll. She claimed that beef cheek rolls were a good alternative to harder rawhides, which can splinter with strong chewers, and can sometimes contain questionable chemicals due to the nature of processing animal skin. Beef cheek rolls are instead made of the inner cheek meat of cows and are softer and more digestible than rawhides.

Why they’re a score

As a dog trainer, I’m big on offering different types of enrichment to my pets. Chewing is an instinctual behavior for dogs and can be self-soothing. A quality (and safe) dog chew will give your dog tons of mental stimulation, may aid in keeping their teeth clean and gums healthy, and can help relieve stress or frustration.

Beef cheek rolls can easily last up to four times longer than a comparably sized bully stick. While my dog, Miso, can eat an entire 12-inch bully stick in less than 10 minutes, a 10-inch beef cheek roll will last her three to four chewing sessions. I occasionally take the beef cheek roll away if I want to prolong its life, but Miso also sometimes decides she’s tired of chewing and will leave it on the ground and walk away. Beef cheek rolls are a little lower value than bully sticks, so she’s more inclined to drop them and stop chewing on her own when she gets tired. If she chews the 10-inch beef cheek roll without stopping, it usually lasts at least two hours, sometimes longer depending on how thick it is. The 4- to 5-inch roll will last her at least an hour. My Rough Collie, Dashi, is a much more gentle chewer. One 4- to 5-inch roll will last her multiple chew sessions over at least a week — if her sister doesn’t get a hold of it before she can finish.

Even if Miso eats an entire beef cheek roll in one sitting, she rarely gets a stomachache. Dashi also seems to tolerate beef cheek rolls better than bully sticks. She has a bit of a sensitive stomach, and since beef cheek rolls are much lower in fat than bully sticks, they don’t give her any tummy issues.

I also love that beef cheek rolls are less of a choking and obstruction hazard than bully sticks. Some dogs (especially powerful chewers like Miso) will get a bully stick down to the last inch or two, then swallow the end piece whole. This is why bully stick holders, which let you hold the end of the bully stick in place so your dog can’t swallow it, have become popular. Since beef cheek rolls take much longer for dogs to chew, you can go to the bathroom or cook dinner without coming back to the entire chew disappearing down their throat. Beef cheek rolls also get softer as your dog chews on them, so they’re not as likely to break into big chunks.

Bottom line

The best thing by far about beef cheek rolls is their price-to-chew-time ratio. The bag of 12, 12-inch bully sticks I used to buy retails for $65, while a bag of eight 4- to 5-inch beef cheek rolls is just $32. The bag of bully sticks would get Miso about 2 hours of chew time, while the bag of beef cheek rolls will get Miso at minimum, eight hours of chewing. If you have a lighter chewer, one bag of beef cheek rolls could last months, making them a much better score than any other dog chew on the market.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
