Racing pigs, jumping dogs, art: Here’s your guide to weekend fun in Shreveport, Bossier

If art is your happy place, you have two opportunities for joy this weekend.

From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, artspace at 708 Texas St. will open for a reception for its two newest exhibits.

“I Think We Will Be Fine From Here” is a solo exhibition of art by Louisiana Tech associate professor of art Joey Slaughter.

On the ground floor, enjoy the “Modern Figurative” exhibition, which gives six artists the chance to redefine this classic art form. The artists represented are Shreveport’s Laura Noland Harter and Gregory Ellis; Emre Karaoglu, Sean Clark and David Knox of New Orleans, and Susie J. Lee from Seattle. The opening is free to attend.

Fun art opportunity No. 2 will take you to Richard Fleming Park at 7919 West Lakeshore Drive from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The park will be filled with live artist displays, demonstrations, hands-on art activities, live music and food trucks.

More than 50 local artists will be showing their works, all inspired by the beautiful nature of Caddo Parish, and this park, in particular, which is a hidden jewel.

See pottery, flintknapping, basket weaving, Chinese ink art, needle felting, painting and other demonstrations, all free. Entry is free, too.

State Fair of Louisiana

Fair-goers walk past an assortment of food options during the 117th State Fair of Louisiana at the fairgrounds in Shreveport, Louisiana, Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023.

It’s State Fair time, and the weekend weather forecast seems to be clearing up. Opening weekend is always a big one.

It’s the weekend for the rodeo and antique tractors, and there will be circus acts, the State Fair Zoo, the Belmont World of Magic, Hollywood Racing Pigs, Jump the Ultimate Dog show, live music from Front Cover Band and Titus & Company, and all the rides and food that always tempt.

Remember, parking is free this year and no weapons are allowed on site. Plus, a new clear-bag policy is in effect as an extra safety precaution for visitors.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
