HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) – Dog Wardens in Hamilton County were investigating after seizing more than a dozen dogs living in harsh conditions outside a local home.
The Hamilton County Dog Warden said they had been aware of the situation but saw no improvement, prompting action on Friday.
Upon arrival, agents discovered 14 dogs outside, restrained by chains weighing approximately 20 pounds each. The dogs, many of which were underweight and suffering from various medical issues, were burdened by chains nearly as heavy as themselves.
Agents found a total of 280 pounds of chains on the property. It was believed the dogs had been living in the conditions for years.
“We’re looking at foster care for each of these animals, trying to find an appropriate place for them to decompress and time to learn how to be a dog,” said Beth Ward, Hamilton County’s chief dog warden.
Lisa Colina from Cincinnati Animal CAREexplained the benefits of fostering.
“It helps us learn about them, what they like or don’t like. It helps you get to know animals on a different level. How they socialize, do they know any tricks, that all helps us fit them with another family,” said Colina.
Shelter staff were encouraging people to foster the animals, even if just for a day or until they are adopted. The shelter provides foster families with all necessary supplies, including food, and covers all veterinary care.
The dogs were improving since their rescue on Friday.
