Chamblee, GA — The DeKalb County Animal Shelter, which is managed by LifeLine Animal Project, has about 600 dogs in its care, which exceeds the shelter’s capacity of 475 animals.
DeKalb County Animal Enforcement Services rescued 33 dogs on Oct. 29 from a single location as part of an animal cruelty case. LifeLine is caring for the dogs, but says their arrival puts other animals at risk as the shelter is overcrowded.
“They will all receive cruelty exams and medical attention as needed. They are now part of a court case and not currently available for adoption, but their arrival puts other animals at risk,” a press release from LifeLine says.
LifeLine has been working throughout the year to decrease the dog population at the DeKalb shelter to 475 through adoption, fosters and rescue partners.
“When the shelter runs out of space, even friendly and healthy animals are at risk for euthanasia,” the press release says. “The staff is urging the community to come to the shelter and help save lives by adopting or fostering a dog to make space for others, like in this cruelty case.”
All adoptions at the shelter are free until the end of October. To learn more about fostering or adoption, click here.
