SAN ANTONIO – Heartbreak on the Northwest side over the weekend…
A local couple is mourning the loss of their dogs, who were shot in their backyard by a San Antonio Police officer.
They want the officer held responsible.
“It’s unacceptable.. it’s unstomachable. It’s unstoppable. It’s.. not rational,” said the dogs owner, Trey Sekula.
Two family members, gone in seconds.
Home security footage shows the moments leading up to a the officer fatally shooting two XL Bullies named Rainee and Freyas.
Sekula said he was enjoying his Sunday with his wife and her friend when the officer unexpectedly showed up, coming around to the home’s back door.
Sekula’s wife, Saybra, let the dogs out while she answered.
In a report from SAPD, the responding officer said he feared for his life.
“I know 100%, zero chance, that that dog would have bit him, even though he had his weapon already drawn,” Trey said. “He, I mean, I just.. I can’t put into words the loss.”
According to the police report, the officer was responding to an assault in progress. He said he heard screaming coming from inside the home.
But Trey said that wasn’t the case and now, their pain is much greater.
Rainee was their 21-year-old daughter’s emotional support animal. She was killed by a drunk driver in 2022.
“One of the worst things is hearing a mama cry for her baby that she’s not going to ever see again,” Trey explained. “Then to have it repeated again with these animals after that? Both these things were avoidable.”
But he said he’ll make sure the dog’s death wasn’t in vain.
On Tuesday, he demanded a meeting with SAPD Chief William McManus to get justice — and emphasize that his dogs were never a threat.
To prove it, he reminded the chief of a photo which shows Trey, his wife, Chief McManus and Rainee from November 2023.
He said he wants the officer involved to face punishment.
“He was standing at the door ready to fire, and he literally fired,” Trey explained. “When they came out, and they didn’t have a chance. That’s, no. It’s not acceptable.”
We reached out to SAPD for comment on the officer’s status, but were told this is an active investigation.
