HAYFORK, Calif. — The owner of the dogs that attacked a young girl in Hayfork has been arrested.
13-year-old Stormy Ashby was walking in Downtown Hayfork last month when she was surrounded and attacked by a group of dogs.
Trinity County Sheriff Tim Saxon said Ashby couldn’t identify which dogs attacked her, so the county took nine of them away for a quarantine period as a safety precaution.
Three of the dogs were later given back to the owner, Meagan Moon, after she paid a fine. Sheriff Saxon said those three dogs were licensed and vaccinated.
On Saturday, Moon was arrested for two separate incidents involving her dogs, one in April of 2022 and the second being the attack on the girl last month.
“We did arrest Meghan Moon for two arrest warrants that were issued by the Trinity County Superior Court with regard to two incidents that were filed by the Trinity County District attorney’s office and yes, both of those were related to animal issues,” said Sheriff Saxon.
The sheriff said during the time of Moon’s arrest, the three dogs she had were still out in public, but an animal control officer confirmed with Moon that she had someone to take care of the dogs. According to Saxon, the person taking care of them was no longer able to do it, so the three dogs were picked up by animal control and all nine are now in the animal shelter in Weaverville.
