PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Two research canines are about to embark on a trip to Northern Arizona to help find rare and endangered plant species.
Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix is known for its beautiful views and peaceful atmosphere, but a big part of its mission is the research and conservation of desert plants.
Circe and Muon are dogs at the botanical garden who will use their noses to help researchers.
Steve Blackwell is leading the upcoming research trip.
“Luckily, we have, some support from the Arizona Lottery to do this project, but we’re hoping to have the dogs help us find endangered cactus of Northern Arizona and talk about how it works.”
Blackwell said the plants they’re looking for are becoming increasingly rare.
“Having the dogs helps us cover as much habitat as they can,” he said. “It‘s really valuable because we can’t do it all ourselves.”
Organizers said most of the dogs come from rescues or shelters.
