Dog’s “toxic trait” during walks has internet in stitches

A video of a golden retriever with a charmingly mischievous habit of “ultimate betrayal” has captured the hearts of viewers on TikTok.

The footage, posted by @charlie_and_friends_, shows the golden retriever pretending to belong to strangers while out on walks. The clip has garnered over 228,000 views since it was posted on October 25.

The video is overlaid with a note that reads: “POV [point of view]: my dog’s toxic trait is that he likes to pretend he’s with someone else.” The footage then reveals the golden retriever confidently walking alongside strangers in a park and even settling down next to unsuspecting diners at outdoor tables.

The video perfectly captures the essence of a dog’s love for social interactions, whether it is with their owner or a stranger they meet during their daily adventures.

A study published in Scientific Reports in March 2019 found that it is not unusual for dogs to form relationships of comparable qualities with both humans and other canines.

The study emphasizes “that these relationships vary along multiple components across different partners.” A dog’s ability to forge bonds with multiple beings is part of what makes them such excellent companions to their human owners.

Stanley Coren is a professor emeritus in the department of psychology at the University of British Columbia in Canada and author of several books on dogs. He discussed this behavior in a February 2013 article for Psychology Today.

Coren said dogs that have been properly socialized will approach virtually anything alive with a friendly demeanor, regardless of species. He added: “Although dogs are happiest when they are in a social situation, the species that they are interacting with is less important than the quality of the interactions.”

‘Ultimate Betrayal’

The golden retriever’s friendly antics in the viral clip has delighted users on TikTok.

Dais122 described the dog’s actions as the “ultimate betrayal when he’s with me I swear,” while ammaija noted: “He is just exploring other options.”

SABRINA & PIM commented that the dog is “Looking for extra snacks.”

Cristina B. said: “My dog does this too to show me how easy would be to replace me.”

Becky injected some playful concern by saying: “Well I would be very happy to greet and love on your toxic dog and then laugh with you as I reunite you cos. you do get reunited. right?! He’s not just, asking to be kidnapped every walk?! I can’t cope with the thought of that.”

Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.

The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
