The Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is looking for someone to adopt a dog that was hit by a car earlier this month and has not been reclaimed by an owner.
On Oct. 13, Stella, a 1-year-old dachshund mix, was hit by a car on Route 4 in Hackensack. She was wearing a pink sweater.
According to Bob Bergamini, manager of the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, as well as social media posts from the Oradell Animal Hospital, Stella was brought into the hospital by a good Samaritan with multiple broken ribs and a fractured pelvis.
She has since been having some trouble walking on all four legs and, as of Thursday, was just starting to put some pressure on her back left leg.
In New Jersey, stray dogs are kept on hold for seven days, giving owners time to reclaim them. According to Bergamini, one person came forward saying that he had given Stella to someone through Facebook, but he did not have any proof of ownership, so there was no way to prove that she was his.
On Friday, Stella was transferred to the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center where she will continue her recovery and eventually be adopted.
For information on how to adopt Stella or any of the shelter’s other animals, visit the shelter’s website at https://www.co.bergen.nj.us/animal-shelter-adoption-center.
You can also keep an eye on the shelter’s Facebook page for updates on Stella’s condition.
