GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI – An emaciated dog suffering from a damaged esophagus is among several abused and neglected animals connected to a criminal case in Northern Michigan, WPBN/WGTU reports.
The dog, now named Mighty Mac, was taken to Cherryland Humane Society earlier this month and is recovering, the report said. This week, an anonymous tip led investigators to the Grand Traverse County home of Mac’s former owner. Two more dogs, a cat and a bearded dragon were seized; they all needed emergency medical care.

Cherryland shared photos and information about Mac on Monday, describing him as a “strong, resilient, loving, bubbly boy.”
He came to the shelter “extremely emaciated, neglected and in need of emergency medical attention,” Cherryland officials said. “As you can see, his condition is heartbreaking but that does not stop him from being the happiest dog.”
Mac has a long recovery ahead of him, the shelter said. His “seriously injured esophagus” was most likely caused by eating rocks, garbage sticks and whatever else he could find to curb his hunger. Shelter staff found trash in his stool.
The injury makes eating painful, but he still loves food, the shelter said.
“He is incredible,” shelter officials said. “His strength brings tears to our eyes. His bright and sunny personality goes beyond words for what he has endured. … We are looking forward to Mighty Mac’s recovery and can’t wait to see his full, chunky self have the strength to wiggle his booty as hard as he wants!”
Mac is not yet available for adoption. Donate to his recovery here.
The couple that lives in the home, a 23-year-old man a 24-year-old woman, was arrested. The man is accused of animal abuse, including beating the dogs. The woman is accused of animal neglect. Their identities have not been released, pending arraignment on charges.
