Man fatally shot his dog because he was upset over a power outage, sheriff says

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WESH) – A Florida sheriff is calling a man “evil” after he allegedly shot and killed his dog because he was upset his power hadn’t been restored after Hurricane Milton.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey had a strong message for 72-year-old John Burgos, who is accused of killing his dog about two days after Hurricane Milton, according to the arrest report.

“You had evil in your heart. You were mad. You couldn’t control your emotions. You were drunk, and you killed your dog,” Ivey said.

Burgos was taken to jail Wednesday.

Ivey says the 72-year-old was upset that Florida Power & Light had not restored his power yet, so he grabbed his gun and opened fire in his house about 4 a.m. Oct. 12. His dog, Flick, was shot.

The sheriff says Burgos was intoxicated when he opened fire.

After the shooting, Burgos went to his neighbor’s house looking for a phone then called 911, according to the arrest report.

“He goes back, sits on the porch, doesn’t try and render aid to the dog or anything,” Ivey said.

When deputies arrived, Burgos allegedly told them he shot his gun twice. They found Flick lying against an open window with bloody wounds to his rib and near his stomach. The dog was taken to a nearby veterinarian’s office but did not survive.

“He still shows no remorse for what happened. Only thing he said when he was told that his dog had died is ‘Man, FP&L made me do that.’ No, you’re an idiot. That’s what made you do this,” Ivey said.

Burgos’ charges include shooting a missile into a dwelling, animal cruelty and use of a firearm under the influence of alcohol. He is being held without bond.
