New questions after Elkhart woman claims missing dog was lost to adoption

BRISTOL, Ind. (WNDU) – Earlier this week, our team told you about a dog that was apparently adopted out of the Humane Society of Elkhart County.

The dog’s owner originally told us her son’s dog ran away and ended up being brought into the shelter as a stray, where it was eventually adopted. She says the adoption happened before the hold period expired.

After seeing our previous story, the humane society claims the woman may have dropped the dog off herself, and it says it has video to prove it.

In the video, you see the front desk receptionist greet a woman who appears to be Clarrissa Jacobs and hand over some intake forms. The forms show Jacobs in her own handwriting state the dog has been seen for months in the neighborhood where she alleges she found him.

We spoke with Jacobs on Monday, who told a different story on how the dog ended up in the shelter in the first place.

“My son took him to his friends, and he got loose, he ended up in the humane society and I’ve been calling them every day since then,” Jacobs said. “They told me it was a $100 fee to get him back. I didn’t have it at the time.”

Our team also spoke with the humane society on Monday. At that time, the operations director knew the dog had been brought in as a stray but hadn’t reviewed the security video at the time.

After our story aired, they decided to do some digging, and that’s when they came across the video showing what appears to be Jacobs dropping off the dog herself.

“We wanted to just make sure we had the story straight,” said Rob LaRoy, executive director of the Humane Society of Elkhart County. “A lot of times, these things happen on social media and we choose not to really fight back most of the time. But in this case, it’s just outright lies, so we wanted to set the story straight.”

The humane society says its ultimate goal is to find good homes for the animals.

“Since that time, we’ve had a conversation with (Jacobs). It appears that it may have been her sister that dropped the dog off,” LaRoy said. “But we do have video tape of it, and it looks very similar to Clarrissa.”

LaRoy says officials at the shelter gave the dog its vaccinations and it was also neutered. He also told us they kept in contact with the owners throughout the week.

“We do first come, first adopt. We don’t place holds for anybody,” LaRoy said. “You need to come in and collect the dog.”

We reached out to Jacobs for another interview about these new developments to give her a chance to address her initial story to us. She said she would provide us with a statement. We’re still waiting for it.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
