KALAMAZOO, MI – Firefighters rescued a family’s dog while putting out a house fire that caused extensive damage.
“The K-9 was found alive but clearly rattled by the firefighting activity and had suffered extensive smoke exposure,” Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said in a release.
The fire was reported around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, as a garage fire in the 1400 block of West Maple Street, east of Oakland Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters determined the fire had spread to the second floor of a house and across the attic.
At one point, dangerous conditions forced firefighters to evacuate the structure.
Once firefighters had the fire under control, they were told that a family dog was still inside. Firefighters went inside and found the dog, which was turned over to family to seek care.
The fire was fed by a steady wind. Firefighters were hampered by downed power lines in back but were able to fight the fire from inside the house until conditions deteriorated.
