STERLING HEIGHTS, MI — A man and his dogs were rescued Saturday from a burning home by police officers who kicked in the door after hearing the man cry for help. According to the Sterling Heights Police Department, a call was received around 2:40 p.m. reporting a fire at a home in the 38500 block of Trafalgar Way.
Officer Jesse Ingrum was one of the first on scene and while he was near the backdoor of the home, Ingrum could hear someone inside yelling for help and banging on the walls. Body cam footage shows Ingrum tried using the door, but it was locked so the he kicked the door in.
Ingrum found the homeowner on the ground and bleeding from the head. The officer was able to get the disoriented man out of the home safely. While Ingrum was assisting the man, other officers found three dogs inside the home and were able to get them to safety as well.
“I commend my officers for their quick thinking and selflessness. Their actions undoubtedly saved a man and his dogs lives,” said Sterling Heights police Chief Dale Dwojakowski. “They acted with courage and determination, putting their own safety at risk to protect others. I’m proud of the officer’s heroic efforts and grateful that all involved were able to escape the incident safely.”
Firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes. The man rescued from the home received medical care on sight from the fire department.
